テイラー・スウィフトは最多となる9部門で受賞
Taylor Swift（テイラー・スウィフト）が、昨年の「All Too Well: The Short Film」に続き「Anti-Hero」で2年連続となるビデオ・オブ・ザ・イヤー賞を受賞。テイラー・スウィフトは最多となる9部門で受賞を果たしており、最優秀ポップ・ビデオ賞の発表時には2002年に活動を休止した*NSYNC（イン・シンク）が約10年ぶりに全員そろってのサプライズ登場。プレゼンターとしてテイラー・スウィフトにトロフィーを渡しました。

ミュージック・ビデオとポピュラーカルチャーへの「顕著な貢献」と「深い影響」に対してMTVによって贈られる特別賞。今回受賞したShakira（シャキーラ）は初の南米アーティストによる受賞となり、15年以上ぶりに出演。「MTV、私がまだ18歳だった頃から私のキャリアの大きな部分を占めてくれてありがとう」と46歳のシャキーラはスピーチを始め、「今夜、私のビジュアルの歴史において重要な役割を果たしてくれた人々に感謝したいと思います。」と述べ、家族への感謝を続けました。
パラマウントのBruce Gillmer（ブルース・ギルマー）は、8月に受賞を発表した声明文で「シャキーラは、そのユニークな音楽的才能で大衆にインスピレーションと影響を与え続けている真の世界的勢力である」と述べた。 「彼女は世界中の女性の先駆者であり、ラテン音楽のグローバル化を先導した最初のアーティストの一人です。 彼女が最高レベルで創作し、楽しませ続けることで、音楽界における彼女の多大な影響は長く続くでしょう。」と述べています。

今年のグローバル・アイコンは、グラミー賞受賞ヒップホップ界の大御所、Sean “Diddy” Combs（ショーン・“ディディ”・コムズ）が受賞。
「これは私にとって夢が叶ったことです。私はMTVを見て育ったので、『ああ、いつかあそこに行けたらいいのに』と思っていました」とディディは語り、続けて「そして、ご存知のとおり、私はペーパーボーイとしてスタートしました。皆さん、私はここにいるとは思っていませんでした。12歳でペーパーボーイとしてスタートしました。そして、ピッツバーグ・スティーラーズのためにNFLフットボール選手になるつもりでした。」とコメント。ディディは、自分の人生とキャリアがうまくいったことに感謝の意を表してスピーチを終えました。

オリヴィア・ロドリゴの事故演出

今回のハイライトのひとつとなったのがオリヴィア・ロドリゴの事故演出。森をイメージしたセットで「vampire」を披露するも途中でセットの背後から花火が激しく燃え上がり爆発。不安そうにしながら歌唱する中で演奏が終わる方向に進み、スタッフが飛び出してきて強制終了のような演出に観客も困惑していましたが、セットは幕で隠れ、そこにバックダンサーと共に再び登場し、「get him back」をパフォーマンスしています。
カーディ・Ｂがミーガン・ザ・スタリオンのコラボ再び

Cardi B（カーディ・Ｂ）がMegan Thee Stallion（ミーガン・ザ・スタリオン）を迎えた新曲「Bongos」で再びコラボが実現。2人にとっても久々のシングルで、パフォーマンス自体も久々であったことに加えて2人が揃っての出演だったことからも大きな歓声に包まれた中でのパフォーマンスとなりました。
ヒップホップ50周年を祝うトリビュート・パフォーマンス
トリビュートはGrandmaster Flash and the Furious Five（グランドマスター・フラッシュ・アンド・ザ・フューリアス・ファイヴ）の1982年の代表曲「The Message」で幕を開け、Doug E. Fresh（ダグ・E・フレッシュ）の1985年の曲「The Show」、Nicki Minaj（ニッキー・ミナージュ）は「Itty Bitty Piggy」と「Red Ruby Da Sleeze」、そして「Truffle Butter」で観客を盛り上げると、Lil Wayne（リル・ウェイン）が登場。2008年のヒット曲「A Milli」を披露するとLL Cool J（LL・クール・J）が1987年の曲「I'm Bad」を観客の近い小さなステージで披露。メインステージへ移動するとジェケットを脱ぎ、1990年の「Mama Said Knock You Out」をゴールドのマイクで力強くパフォーマンス。2曲を終えるとRUN DMCを紹介し、「Rock Box」、そして代表曲「Walk This Way」が始まると参加したアーティストが再び登場し、全員でのパフォーマンスとなりました。
